Course Schedule
A sample course schedule for Fall 2025 for all degree program types is below. Please reference the appropriate degree handbook and interactive degree checklists, at the bottom of this page, for planning future quarters.
Masters Handbook (will be released later this summer)
Doctoral Handbook (will be released later this summer)
CHS Course Offerings
A table of annual and quarterly course offerings in CHS will be made available later in the summer. These tables are updated periodically as they are tentative lists.
With the exception COM HLT 286, courses are typically offered once a year. Please plan accordingly.
Course Selection Advice
For students returning to school after a number of years, or those who have not experienced the quarter system, it is recommended to enroll in no more than 12 units for the Fall Quarter.
If you have any questions about specific courses in relation to skill development or career plans, please consult your faculty advisor. It is also recommended to review past syllabi.
Interactive Degree Checklists
Interactive degree checklists will be available to help students keep track of their degree progress. These checklists will be emailed directly by the CHS SAO later in the summer. These forms will also be available for download on the CHS Student Resources portal, which will be made available to you closer to the start of Fall quarter.
Syllabi
CHS Course Syllabi Archive access will be granted in August.

Course Search
When searching for courses on MyUCLA, you will need to look through the specific subject area/department offering the course, not just under public health.
The seven-character subject area abbreviation for the five FSPH departments are:
Biostatistics = BIOSTATS
Community Health Sciences = COM HLT
Environmental Health Sciences = ENV HLT
Epidemiology = EPIDEM
Health Policy and Management = HLT POL
Public Health = PUB HLT
Course Numbering
Course numbers indicates the course's level and type:
0-99 are lower division undergraduate courses and cannot be used towards the unit minimum for any professional or graduate degree program. Blue petitions to use a lower division course to fulfill course requirements will be denied.
100-199 are upper division undergraduate courses. See Elective Requirement for conditions relating to masters programs.
200-299 are graduate courses
300-399 are teacher-training courses typically only used for students who are hired as Teaching Assistants. These courses do not count towards the unit minimum requirement for any degree program.
400-499 are designed for professional programs (MPH)
500-599 are independent study courses. See Elective Requirement for conditions relating to specific degree programs.
Courses with an M preceding the number indicates a cross-listed course. This course is offered jointly by more than one department.
Elective Requirements
MPH
MPH students must take approximately 12 units of CHS Department electives and 8 units of school electives to meet the 68 unit minimum for the MPH degree. A maximum of 8 units outside of COM HLT and PUB HLT may be used towards the 68 unit minimum, but with conditions:
Upper division and graduate/professional courses (1xx, 2xx, 4xx) within FSPH can be taken without blue petition approval.
Graduate/Professional courses (2xx, 4xx) outside of FSPH can be taken with blue petition approval, but should be relevant to public health

Lower division courses (0-99) and teacher-training courses (300-399) within and outside FSPH, including CHS, cannot be used towards the degree. This is University policy.
Only the first 4 units of any 596 course can be used. [Ex: If you take 4 units of CHS 596, but take 4 units of EPI 596 in a later quarter, only the first 4 units taken (CHS 596) will be counted towards the 60 unit minimum.]
Only CHS graduate/professional courses (2xx, 4xx) can be applied to the 12 units of department electives requirement
MS Students
MS students must take approximately 24 units of electives selected in consultation with their advisor to meet the 60 unit minimum for the MS degree.
Upper division and graduate courses (1xx, 2xx) within FSPH can be taken without blue petition approval.
Graduate courses (2xx) outside of FSPH can be taken with blue petition approval, but should be relevant to the MS Report or Thesis
Professional courses (4xx) taking within and outside of FSPH can be counted as electives if you have completed 20 units/five graduate courses (2xx).
Upper division courses (100-199) outside of FSPH requires an approved blue petition to count towards the degree and should be relevant to the MS Report or Thesis

PhD Students
Doctoral students should consult with their advisor when choosing courses to meet their 48 unit minimum.
As a doctoral student, undergraduate courses (0-199) are not typically taken
Teacher-training courses (300-399) will not count towards the required unit minimum
Only the first 4 units of any 596 course can be used. [Ex: If you take 4 units of COM HLT 596, but take 4 units of COM HLT 596 in a later quarter, only those first 4 units taken in the Fall) will be counted as an elective.]
Non-Degree Required Courses
While each degree program has specific course requirements that every student must fulfill, as a UCLA student you are welcome to enroll in courses offered by any department on-campus for your own learning/not intended to count towards your degree program. Please keep in mind that some courses have enforced prerequisites or enrollment restrictions that may prevent you from enrolling.
