Steady As She Goes: A WHOOPS ON http://veggiepirates.com/

Or web content creators are still not perfect :-)

The site http://veggiepirates.com/ contains info on the next VeggieTales movie, due out January, 2008.

One of their promos has a factual error:

"Steady as she goes" is defined incorrectly, even within the bounds of children's comedy :-)

Now, Please turn off your speakers unless you like really great sound :-)

If you "Enter Site" the site (and get the menuless popup) , or directly go to http://veggiepirates.com/home.html

(If you want you can click on "SKIP INTRO", but it is fun to watch )

Up on the center right of the Keystone of the Proscenium Arch (the wavy menu bar/picture frame at the top) ,

click on "TALK LIKE A PIRATE".

Then Click on "START" and "NEXT" (past PIECE OF EIGHT) and

"NEXT" (past AHOY THERE) and

"NEXT" (past ARG) and

"NEXT" (past 'TWAS A FINE DAY AT SEA TODAY) and

"NEXT" (past AVAST YE SCURY DOGS) and

"NEXT" (past AYE) and

We arrive at "STEADY AS SHE GOES" and the "wacky" definition is:

"Be careful; a warning for seafarers that the ship (which often has a girl's name) is starting to sail or may be in danger of rock monster attack".

I'm guessing the latter part is a gag in the movie, which I cannot wait to see by the way :-)

My problem is with the "Be careful" and

the "the ship [...] is starting to sail" part.

What should it be? Let's use Google and this search:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22steady+as+she+goes%22+ship+course+navigation+site%3Anavy.mil

We find the document entitled "RATING FORMING PART OF A NAVIGATION WATCH: WORK AND RECORD BOOK: REV - Oct 07".

Scrolling to page 47 (in the PDF) (labelled MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND p. 17) or doing a find for Steady as she goes

we find the following:

When hearing the command in

English, “Steady as She Goes,”

the candidate will note the

heading of the vessel, stop any

swing of the ship, and steer in

the direction noted when the

command was given.

1. Repeat order

2. Note the heading when the command was given

3. Immediately apply rudder to stop any swing of the ship

3. Steer in the direction noted

4. State: she’s steady as she goes

I am Just being picky I guess :-)

Images of both:

Well, "Your feedback has been forwarded to the appropriate contact person for response. Thank you for your interest in Universal Studios."... We shall see :-) Hmmm "Do not duplicate or redistribute in any form..." Is that really in their best interests for comment page? Probably just boiler plate.

Update: 20071221T2310-0500, I sent this site link and a request to Phil Vischer to ask them to correct the site :-)

Arg, It be a fine web site :-)
