Windows Explorer closes and restarts on systems that run OneCare Family Safety

CAUSE

On some Windows Vista or Windows XP SP2 configurations, the Family Safety Browser Helper Object causes an access violation in Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe). When Family Safety Browser Helper Object is unloaded from Windows Explorer, the object releases a thread local storage (TLS) slot that it does not own.

 


 So we see that the programmers missed these two important points from

  • Clean up your own mess.
  • Don't take things that aren't yours.

  •  
  • Getting all of this right is very hard, so expect mistakes.  And have another computer (or operating system around).  I like KNOPPIX.
