Read your textbook and the article by H.C. Erik Midelfort for relevant facts about the spread of witchcraft accusations in the15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Then, carefully read the documents listed above. Write an essay analyzing how attitudes and policies toward magic and witchcraft changed over time.
Address the following questions: Why did the European witch craze occur when it did? What was the religious, legal, and philosophical background to the craze? What triggered the craze? Did the craze perform a “function” in society? Why were women the prevalent victims of Europe's witch craze? What caused the witch craze to finally die down?
You must cite your sources, and list them at the end of your paper as a List of References.
Typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides (this is usually the default for most word processing programs), approximately 700-900 words.
