Essay Question. Worth 20 points.
You will be given one of the following questions on which to write an essay, approximately 300-600 words. You will not have a choice. Please bring an examination booklet. (“Blue book.”)
1. Why can we characterize the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as “centuries of upheaval”? Why did so many transformations in world society take place during this period?
2. Explain the relationship between eighteenth-century economic growth, political change (including empire building), and intellectual transformations. Did they reinforce each other? Which set of transformations seems most important and lasting today?
3. . What effects did Atlantic trade have on the global economy? How did political conflict in the New World reflect deeper ideological changes in the Old World?
4. The inhabitants of Europe, Latin America, and Asia lived, ate, and thought radically differently in 1700 than in 1400. Why? Discuss the ways exchange of foods, cultures, and diseases reshaped societies on each of these continents. Use specific examples.
