Primary Source Evaluation Assignment #2: The Long Telegram
For the second paper of the course, you will write a comparison of “Long Telegram” by George Kennan and a similar telegram by Nikolai Novikov. Both were written in 1946, just after World War II had ended, but at a point at which the relations between the USA and the USSR had soured considerably. Kennan was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy in Moscow; Novikov was the Soviet Ambassador to the United States.
(George Frost Kennan (l) and Nikolai Vasilevich Novikov)
What are the ideological assumptions of both authors? How does each look upon their former allies? How do each of the authors interpret recent actions by the other side? Do the two documents implicitly or explicitly agree on any points? What do Kennan and Novikov recommend as policies (implicitly or explicitly) to their respective governments? Was the Cold War inevitable?
Write a paper on the origins of the Cold War, comparing the interests, goals, and policies of the two new superpowers, the USA and USSR.
You must cite your sources, and list them at the end of your paper as a List of Works Cited. If you have any questions regarding how to format your paper, please consult the Purdue University web site explaining MLA format. Please do not “borrow” material from the web without providing proper citations and enclosing direct quotations in quotation marks. Otherwise, it will be considered plagiarism, and the penalties will be severe. Typed, double-spaced, 800-1000 words. Please submit before midnight on the due date to Turnitin.
Note: before sending the assignment, you must rename the file in the following format: LastnameFirstname-papernumber.doc. Example: JacksonChristopher-paper2.doc. If the file is not properly named, it will not be accepted.
