2021

26th July 2021

Last week saw another busy week of training and racing for the club. Our underage athletes that have qualified for the prestigious national championships are putting the hours in before their big days out in the first two weeks in August and our adults had a chance to race again at the East Cork Athletics Division 5km on the MTU track last Wednesday night.

East Cork 5km Track championship:

Last Wednesday night, 21st July, the East Cork Athletics Division board hit another home run by organising and successfully running a 5km track championship race in the Munster Technical University track in Bishopstown.

The Resurrecting of a championship race that had been dropped from the traditional track and field combined program in recent times due to lack of participation was brought about by the desire of the board to think outside the box and try to put on races for athletes starved of competition over the last 18 months.

Carraig na bhFear AC played their part by offering their hour on the track on Wednesday night to facilitate the event. Two races were offered to entice all standards. The first first for all those that intended to run sub 19 minutes and a second for those who predicted running over that time.

The first race was an all male affair with Midleton ACs Frank Hayes taking an impressive win from East Cork ACs Tim O’Donoghue and fellow clubman Sean McCarthy in third.

Carraig were represented in race one by Willie Walsh (7th) , Joesph Daly (11th) and Tony Dunne (12th).

The women’s medals were fought for in race two and we had a podium finish for Rhona Lynch taking bronze who was involved in a great battle with East Cork ACs Annelise Hutch for the second place behind the convincing winner Jen Preston again from East Cork AC.

Our club were well represented in race two with seven competing. Darragh O”Keeffe led the way with a fourth place finish and under the majic 20 minutes with 19:58 in his first ever track race. Aisling Byrne was fourth in the womens race and led the way for Pat O’Connell , Siobhan Walsh, Liam Colbert & Cliona Hurley who were all making their debut on the tartan. Great efforts from everyone on the night in what was a wonderfully warm and friendly atmosphere to race in.

Munster juniors/under 23 track and field championships:

Some of our wonderful junior & under 23 squad traveled to Templemore last Saturday, 24th July, to compete in the Munster junior (under 20) and under 23 track and field championships.

A wonderful haul of medals and titles were brought back to Carraig with our wee club taking 7 of the 16 titles won by Cork clubs on the day and 9 medals in all.

A great return from our traveling party and lots of great racing experience for those outside of the medals who laid down some times those who were finishing off what has been a compressed season for our young adult track athletes.

Look forward:

A small number of our masters & seniors are heading back to Templemore again this Saturday for the Munster senior & masters track and field championships.

With the hectic and erratic pace of this season we are straight into national underage competition the following weekend in Tullamore. A busy two weeks preparing ahead for our qualified juveniles.

17th & 18th July 2021

Munster Juvenile Track & Field

Another weekend of Munster athletics juvenile track and field action in MTU for Carraig na bhFear AC athletes trying to get amongst the medals and qualify for the prestigious national championships. Two days of glorious sunshine and warm conditions made for ideal conditions for the field events & sprints but made things difficult for the endurance types.

Throws:

Field events have been a happy hunting grounds for our athletes over the last decade and last weekend proved more of the same.

Discus:

Two athletes in the discus took two medals home for their efforts.

Blessing Alamu continues to pursue the dark arts of throwing that have seen her represent Ireland at the schools international in the past. Blessing won the under 19 competition despite throwing with a nasty finger injury she got during her long jump competition.

Our youngest field eventer over the weekend was under 14 Josh Judd and had a terrific debut competition with the discus when he threw a substantial PB with his final throw to take a magnificent victory from a field of five competitors.

Hammer:

Josh doubled up on his medal haul by taking a fine bronze in the boys under 14 hammer competition with another PB amongst a set of very solid six throws with no foul on his card.

Distance races:

Steeplechase:

What a wonderful return we had from our two newbies in the boys steeplechase races with both medaling impressively in sweltering heat in the early afternoon.

Timmy Hawkins won his 2000 meter under 17 race with a comfortable margin growing in confidence over the 3ft high barriers as the 5 laps unwound. A terrific win and Timmy will now make his first trip to nationals as a provincial champion.

David Maher took a hard won silver medal in the 3000 meter under 18 race up against an accomplished hurdler in Fergus ACs Barry Conway. Clearing the barriers smoothly throughout David is another that will be making an appearance at nationals.

1500m:

Two athletes in the 1500 races on the Saturday , the boys day in Eoin Quirke and Aidan Maher. Both boys were just outside the medals in very high standard races. Aidan was 5th in the under 16 race and Eoin was fourth in the 17s to the same winner in Harry Colbert from Waterford AC who smashed the 3k championship record last week. Colbert is surely one to watch for the future as he was just a mere 2/10ths of a second off breaking one of the oldest championship records of the championship while front running the entire race in baking heat. That record has stood since 1984 and some serious athletes haven’t come close all through those intervening years.

Jumps:

Long jump:

Four long jumpers over the two days brought home two excellent medals.

Harry Buckley jumped in the boys under 19 on Saturday and notched up an impressive 6:33 PB jump to take a silver medal in a good standard competition.

Joel Joesph was unlucky to not pluck a medal from the under 17 competition but just came up short ending in the dreaded 4th place a mere 5cm off a medal.

Blessing Alamu won the under 19 competition early on the Sunday morning with another PB jump of 5:50 in her very first attempt.

Caoimhe Geoghegan was sixth out of 10 in her under 17 competition.

High Jump:

Three high jumpers over the two days again had a great return of two medals.

George Alamu took gold in the boys under 17 with a PB jump to set the tone for Timmy Colbert to follow behind him a little later in the under 16 boys competition who also PB’d to take a bronze medal.

Rebecca Akinkoulie was our sole competitor in the girls high jump on Sunday and in her very first competition she finished in a credible 7th, a competition that was interrupted with competitors being taken away for their heats of the 100s.

Sprints:

100m sprint:

In the 100 meter sprints we had six competing in this event of small margins.

All but one of our athletes made it through the heats to their respective finals and both under 19s Emma Akinkoulie and Sam Judd managed to pluck two bronze medals to add to their matching medals from the 200s on the first days events. Both athletes will now head to nationals in 100 & 200 meters.

Of our other athletes, Rebecca Akinkoulie won her heat impressively in the under 15 event but couldn’t replicate that performance in the final and was 8th.

Joel Joesph in the under 17s was desperately unlucky again ending the last race of the day in an agonising 5th place.

The ever improving Kiah Olotu was fourth in the under 19 race to add to her fourth last week in the 200.

Caoimhe Geoghegan just missed out on qualifying for her final by one place in the under 17s.

400m sprint:

Two competitors in the 400 meters sprints and both under 19s.

Isobel O’Meara took a wonderful bronze medal while running a 1.5 second PB. A great achievement for Isobel and will now take her first ever trip to a national individual track final.

Harry Buckley took on the 400 straight after his long jump on Saturday and was sixth in a competitive field. A good effort from Harry who has rarely ran this most arduous of events.

100 hurdles:

Our sole competitor in the girls short hurdles was under 19 Emily O’Meara. After beginning training over two years ago to try a hurdle race Emily had Covid come along and cancel every attempt she made to get to a race for a complete newbie. Emily finally got her day in the blazing sun late Sunday and took a magnificent gold medal.

George Alamu was our very first athlete into competition on the Saturday morning at 10 and set the tone for the whole weekend by taking a bronze medal in the boys under 17 hurdles.

Summary:

Days 3 and 4 of the Munster juvenile T&F were again a great success with 13 medals and six Munster champions a excellent return for our athletes efforts.

Added to our total from the first day we have 21 medals over the whole championships.

It has been very satisfying to have so many first timers making the national selection and so many first timers getting a chance to compete at this level after such a long lay off.

Look forward:

This Wednesday we will be hosting the East Cork Athletics Division 5km track championship in MTU @ 2000hrs. We’re looking forward to a great evenings racing in warm conditions.

This Saturday our juniors & under 23s have their Munster T&F championships in Templemore and we are bringing a strong squad to what hopefully will be a friendly , well attended competition.

11th July 2021

East Cork Track & Field:

Our latest report comes from the East Cork Athletics Division juvenile track and field championships day two which was held in MTU on Sunday 11th July.

This was the first opportunity that the vast majority of juvenile athletes in East Cork have gotten to compete on a tartan track at this level in over two years due to the impact on organised events of the Covid pandemic. The last time a divisional or county T&F for underage athletes was held in MTU was May 2019 which is a crippling blow to most clubs trying to keep their athletes motivated to train.

That said credit again has to go to the officers & working members of the East Cork Divisional Athletics board who put together this limited championship on the first available date.

It’s at these type of events that we discover who the potential stars of the future may be and the kids get to try events they are unfamiliar within a relaxed and supportive environment. Their absence for the last two years has hopefully not stunted the development of the next generation. Nearly all our 64 registered competitors from ages under 12 up to 19 attended and had a wonderful day in warm dry conditions.

Some of the stand out performances of the day were Laila Olotu who took three medals in under 12 girls 80 meters (gold),long jump (gold) & turbo javelin (silver).

Dylan Mulcahy took medals in every event in the under 14 boys 1500(gold),100 meters (bronze), high jump (bonze) & long jump (bronze) to show what a strong, talented & versatile athlete he hopefully will become.

Faye O’Riordan like Dylan took medals in all her under 14 events also. Faye who seems to have been around for years already hasn’t lost any of her enthusiasm or range over every distance to display her strengths by taking 1500 meter(bronze), 100 meter (silver), High jump (silver) & long jump ( bronze).

Lucy Lynch contributed greatly to the team score by taking home four medals also. Lucy like her club mates before her medaled in every one of her events to take home two bronze(under 15 1500 & under 16 high jump), one silver (under 16 long jump) & one gold (under 15 100 meters).

Our under 17 to 19s turned out in force as usual and had a great return taking 19 of the 24 medals on offer to that age group and had great crack doing so.

After all those wonderful performances and the 48 medals taken we fell short in the overall team competition and lost our grip on the Willie Harte trophy for this year to a very strong Midleton team. We will endeavour to redouble our efforts to bounce back and wrestle the title back next season.

Thank you to all the athletes, parents, coaches & officials who made the day what it was, an enjoyable ,cheap(€10 per family) day out.

Other Business:

Congratulations to our club vice captain Tony Dunne who completed the hardman half Ironman triathlon in Waterville, Co Kerry last Saturday. Tony doubled up on his “hardman” credentials by spending the day Sunday on his feet in MTU at the East Corks cheering on the kids.

Look forward:

Day 3 & 4 of the Munster under 12 to 19 T&F championships takes place this Saturday and Sunday in MTU and we have 23 athletes entered in 31 individual events hoping to take home precious medals and qualify for the prestigious national championships. All the very best of luck to all.

3rd & 4th July 2021

Carraig Athlete Short Trip to Munsters at MTU!

Last weekend saw MTU (CIT) the venue for the resumption of any form of Munster athletics competition for the first time in almost 18 months. Day one & two of four Munster juvenile track and field championships for under 12s to 19s was split into boys on the Saturday & Girls Sunday.

This was one of many changes to the format of these championships still overshadowed by Covid guidelines. One other change was the reduced qualifying positions for national finals in August. This year there would only be the top three and not four qualifiers to advance to nationals from each event. The auto entry for under 17 to 19s was also withdrawn meaning older athletes had to compete to get their day at nationals.

Boys Saturday 3rd:

Distance:

On the Saturday it was four of our middle distance boys first into action in the under 16 to 19 3000 meter races.

Aidan Maher was in the under 16 race in his first competitive effort over the distance. 6th place for Aidan was a good first showing over the distance and he will have another chance at nationals when he races over the steeplechase barriers on day 3.

Eoin Quirke & Timmy Hawkins were in the boys 17 race and it turned out to be one of the races of the day. The top four athletes all ran under the previous championship record which had stood since 1988 and Eoin won a terrific 3 up sprint in the home straight to take second behind the clear leader Harry Colbert from Waterford AC who knocked a whopping 13 seconds off the previous record. A great medal for Eoin and tough lines on the fourth placed athlete who ran a time fast enough to win the national title most days.

Timmy was a little behind the top four in fifth place and like Aidan will have another bite of the cherry when he attempts the steeplechase in two weeks time.

David Maher was in the under 18 race and again was in Fifth in a high class field. David will also be joining the boys in the steeplechase races on the 17th hoping for better luck.

Our sole entry in the 800 meter races was Dylan Mulcahy in the under 14 race. This was Dillon’s first outing at this standard and he acquitted himself manfully in this tough discipline. Outside the medal contention this day but invaluable experience gained for the years ahead.

Field:

We had only one field eventer competing in the boys ages in Javelin thrower Timmy Colbert. Timmy had one of his best results with a wonderful win and a fine best effort of 40.32 metres with the 600 gram javelin in boys under 16. A day at nationals secured for another one of our multi event athletes.

Sprints:

Two of our junior boys lined out in the 200 meter sprints.

Under 17 Joel Joseph got through his heat with a big Q in second place but even though he ran faster in the final he was just outside the medals in fourth place.

Joel will go again in the 100 meters in two weeks hoping to do at least one better.

Under 19 Sam Judd did just that taking the third step of the podium with a strong run into a substantial headwind.

Sam will now roll into the second days racing over the shorter 100 with his national ticket secured and a medal in the bag.

Girls Sunday 4th:

Distance:

We had two middle distance competitors were in action in the 3000 meter races and had a hugely successful return.

In the under 16 race Aine Sheridan pushed the pace throughout and won a terrific two up sprint over the last 50 meters to claim the title. A massive achievement for Aine taking her first ever Munster title.

Rebecca Kelleher was in action in the under 17 race and like the boys the same age the previous day it was arguably the race of the day. The championship record was smashed by 13 seconds again with the first two athletes under the old mark and Rebecca took a hard fought third just outside the old record. Another big medal for Rebecca. Her first T&F Munster podium and with it her first trip to national finals.

Our youngest competitor over the two days was under 13 Jess Akinkoulie in the 600 meter race. In her baptism of fire at this level Jess found the going tough and may find her future lies following her sister’s down the sprints road. Jess will give the 80 meter sprints a lash on day two on the 18th.

Walks:

One of the upsides of the enforcement of lockdown was the establishment of the Rob Heffernan walking academy to give focus and motivation to the walking communities coaches & athletes. With that extra stimulus coach Martin Hurley has uncovered seemingly another gem in under 14 Aoife Martin. In a torrential downpour of rain that lasted the entire 2km race Aoife led from start to finish in her first ever race to take a Munster title from a field of 8 walkers. Terrific performance and character for such a relative newcomer.

Field:

Aine Sheridan had one of the most unusual doubles seen in athletics when she took a silver medal in the under 16, 500gram javelin. Unusual to see middle distance athletes mixing it with the throwers but what a great return from Aine who is developing into a very versatile athlete.

Long hurdles:

Only one long hurdler this year at Munsters in what has been such a happy hunting ground for us in recent years is disappointing and surely a effect of the long absence from competition, indoor winter training & track access brought about by the pandemic.

Lucy Lynch went in the heats of the under 15 250 2ft 3inch hurdles and was fourth in her heat & didn’t make the final.

We hope that Lucy will lead the way for our next generation of hurdlers for the future.

200 meter Sprints:

We had six sprinters in the 200 meter races and all made it through their heats to finals.

Emma Akinkoulie & Kiah Olotu were in the under 19 race and Emma took the third step of the podium and Kiah was just behind in 4th. A great return to action for both girls and especially Emma who has come back from cruciate knee surgery & rehabilitation to get back to a national track finals.

Caoimhe Geoghegan made the 17s final with a third place in her heat but an unfortunate injury ruled her out of the final. She will hopefully have another bite at the cherry on day two.

Leah Dunne was tantalisingly close to a national final with a fourth place in a photo finish in the girls 16 and now looks to be at home amongst the speed merchants and one to watch for the future.

Rebecca Akinkoulie impressed by winning her heat of the under 15 qualifying and was joined in the final by Lucy Lynch who made it in a fastest qualifier by times.

5th & 6th in the final for the girls was a great return for both in their first day of competition in some time.

Summary:

From the first two days of Munsters we have taken a fantastic 8 medals and with that 7 athletes qualified to go to all Ireland’s currently scheduled to take place in Tullamore on the 7th & 8th of August.

More importantly 4 of the seven will be making their debut at nationals representing our latest group of rising stars.

East Cork Juvenile T&F day one:

With the current restrictions on participation & attendance at outdoor events this years juvenile East Cork track and field championships had to take a different approach.

On Monday night the 5th day one was hosted by Youghal AC on their training grounds for under 9s,10s & 11s.

A strong showing from our youngest members was a delight to see and the weather was mild and dry to aid the competition.

The Willie Harte trophy for best overall club was up for grabs and points are allocated in descending order for podium places. From 18 events we had 9 podium places and 5 gold medals to get our club off to a great start in the inter club competition.

Medalists on the night were.

Girls u9 - Maeve Drinan Silver 200m & Gold T. Jav.

Boys u9 - Cathal Walsh Bronze Long Jump.

Boys U10 Harry Varley 300m Gold, T Jav Silver & Long Jump Gold.

Girls u 11 Turbo Jav. Gold Mary Kate Dawson & Silver Hannah Coffey.

Boys U11 Paul Colbert Gold T Jav.

Well done to all who traveled and put in such terrific performances to help our club attempt to retain the Willie Harte trophy for a third year. Hopefully our older athletes can put in a similar performance on day two this Sunday in MTU.

Look forward:

Day two of the East Cork Juvenile track & field championships takes place this Sunday in MTU and should be a great spectacle and hopefully the beginning of a return to some sporting normalcy for our juvenile athletes who have been disproportionately affected by the lack of competition these last 18 months. Credit is due to the East Cork Athletics Division board and their working club affiliates who have gone above and beyond to get the championships to happen.

Training will continue through the summer and new members are as always welcome. Please check out our website carraignabhfearac.com to find out more details and links to our social media platforms.
