Note from the Chairman!

The Club has hosted three cross country events over three of the last four weekends. Each event was a great success and Carraig na bhfear AC members should be justly proud of this achievement.

Organising one cross country event is no mean feat…. arranging for the availability of a field, mapping and planning the course, arranging for portable toilets, amplification and ambulance crews, preparing signage, planning for parking, weather proofing access to the fields, praying for dry weather, sorting the float for the gate, laying out the course on the Saturday, sourcing generators, catering, marquee; finding stewards to ensure safe access and egress, supervising parking, stewarding the course throughout the Sunday, making coffees!, taking up the course after the last race on Sunday, tiding up the field, removing the road signs… and we had to do that three times… and without a single word of complaint!

A special effort was put in to the hosting of the Munster event and, rightly, the club has received numerous message of thanks from clubs throughout Munster, even some Cork clubs!!, complimentary of the set up and professionalism of the event. The Club gets only a token payment from East Cork (€100) and Munster (€500) for hosting their events and the gate goes proceeds go directly to those Boards; so money is not our reward. A special thanks to the Buckley and O’Sullivan families for making their land available and all the help with preparing the fields for competition. Its greatly appreciated.

The Committee of the Club has asked that I’d write this note to especially thank all members, parents and friends of the Club for their tremendous help over the three weekends. There was a real pulling together by everyone. Though tasking and at times just hard work there was a great unity of purpose and evident pride and ownership taken by members and athletes and that bodes well for the success of the Club. It was also (at times) pretty good fun (especially if you don’t get out much)…

I’m at the “there’s too many who helped to mention” section here. There are. However, some highlights were… (names may be changed to protect the guilty)

Teddy driving the Fr Ted caravan away with half the Munster Council on board

Michael showing that he missed his calling as a Revenue collector or doorman or both

Dan welding a crutch handle to a tape roller (patent pending)

Mary for bundling the tape up without using the aformentioned tape roller; mortal sin

Dave finding his inner Boutrus Boutrus-Ghali in the incident involving some people, a car and a driveway

Willie mustering a battalion of ground troops for stewarding (and fire officers for sandwich making)

Con for his careful graffiti on election posters and sign posting “left” for all routes from the field

Some nameless club official in a futile effort to shovel “cow droppings” from the course

Noreen and Ger for doing everything

So well done to everyone and thank you all from the Club!

27th of September, 2016

Hi all, please take a minute to read the note below from our club chairman Philip Coffey:

Following the unprecedented success of our athletes in Track and Field at Munster and All Ireland Championships this summer nine of our athletes in the 16 to 19 age group are selected for the Munster performance squad. This will afford elite level training and it is great to see such a large contingent from Carraig na bhfear AC.

Congratulations to James Sheehan, Laura Sheehan, Emma Coffey, Martha Quane, Nessa Wheeler, Rebecca Kearney, Katie Walsh, Ciaran O’Sullivan and Maebh Daly on their selection.

In the All Ireland Championships in July the club’s “older” athletes were in great form. Martha Quane followed up on her gold in last year’s discus event with a silver in the U16 discus this year throwing a 3 metre personal best of 33 metres. Emma Coffey won gold in the u 16 pole vault with a new championship record and also had the honour of being selected to represent Ireland in the pole vault at the Schools International held in Kent, England.

Her sister Orla, taking a break from the track, won a silver in the girls u 15 pole vault. Ciaran Hurley won gold in the boys walk u 14 having earlier in the year won a silver medal at the indoor championships. Rebecca Kearney also won gold in the girls u 18 walk at the championships in Tullamore and will shortly be taking part in an invitational event in England. Daire O’Sullivan ran a personal best but was just pipped on the line for a medal in the very competitive 1500m boys u 15 race in Tullamore missing third by one second in a fast time of 4.28.27. James Sheehan, on his return from rugby and under the expert coaching of his father Con, won silver in the boys u 19 discus. Katie Walsh achieved a national medal getting bronze in the girls u 18 high jump also with the benefit of coaching from her father Willie. On the same day she also placed fourth in the final of the u 18 400 metre hurdles. Ciaran Nugent made the national final in a very competitive field in the u 17 boys 400m.

Michelle Ugwah jumped into fourth place in the u 13 long jump missing out on a medal by just one centimetre. Maebh Daly threw her javelin into fifth place in Ireland less than 40 centimetres off a medal position. Blathnaid Daly made the final in the u 16 Triple Jump a new event for her. In something of a trend both girls are also coached by their father Michael (on his nights off from coaching everyone else!). In the All Ireland B championships at the start of July the Daly brothers won medals for the club. Pat Daly won gold in his shot putt event and Joseph Daly’s excellent commitment to his training paid off when he won silver in the long jump and also achieved 5th position in the final of a fast boys u 16 800 metres.

We will look at the All Ireland medals and results achieved in track and field by our younger athletes in a separate post.

As can be seen from these results the club has been particularly successful in some of the technical field events and this is a welcome extra option for athletes of the club in addition to the club’s traditional strength in track racing and cross country. The achievement of these athletes is a credit to their individual dedication and commitment and that of their coaches and parents. The standard required at National events is always high and there are great sacrifices made to achieve at this level. The club is keen to support and develop all older athletes and will be reimbursing the registration cost for the athletes selected on to the Munster Performance Squad (athletes should approach club treasurer Martin Hurley when he’s got a free moment at training for reimbursement).
