Club History

Carraig na bhFear Athletic Club was formed in September 1980, re-establishing an athletic club in the area for the first time in a number of years. There has always been a great athletic tradition in Carraig na bhFear and the current club was formed with a view of continuing this tradition.

From the clubs first beginnings it has had a thriving juvenile section, attracting members from Carraig na bhFear itself and surrounding areas such as Glenville, Watergrasshill, Whitechurch, Rathcormac, Bartlemy, Grenagh, Bweeng, Rathpeacon, Upper Glanmire, and Ballyvolane. In addition junior, senior and masters athletes take part in the many local road races as well as cross country and Track & Field Championships.

Carraig na bhFear Athletic Club prides itself on fostering a family atmosphere in the club and welcomes athletes of all ages and abilities. Our athletes take part in East Cork, County, Munster and National competitions in both cross country and track & field and have had great success over the years.

Since its foundation in 1980 Carraig na bhFear Athletic Club have hosted numerous cross country championships at all levels. It is testament to the great support received from local farmers that fifteen different venues in the locality have been used to host these championships. The club hosted the National juvenile cross country championships in 1991 and again with the junior and senior inter county cross country championships in 1999, and also the National intermediate and masters cross country championships in 2006.

The clubs training base is the Sacred Heart College where the club use the playing fields for outdoor training and the gym for indoor training. The playing fields are used all year round as they are floodlit for training in wintertime. In addition the club use the MTU track for Track & Field training.
