The fire service picture in San Diego County is very complicated. Many different agencies provide service. But if you use this map as a starting point, you might be able to get a handle on the situation.

1. San Diego City FD provides fire and ambulance service for the city.

2. Several city FDs (and some fire protection districts) provide coverage in the suburban areas.

3. Cal Fire, US Forest Service, and the San Diego County Fire Authority cooperate to cover the rural areas.

4. If you want to dive into this deeper - you might want to ask these questions in order - who owns the fire station? - who owns the vehicles in the station? - who staffs the station? - who pays for the staff? - who dispatches the units?

Very recently - Pine Valley FPD and San Diego County Rural FPD have been merged (or are in the process of being merged) into the San Diego County Fire Authority (SDCFA). Apparently SDCFA is going to be the big player in the rural areas. I think they have approx 30 stations at this time and recently got a ISO Class 3 rating.

Some oddball things that I noticed.

The Cal Fire contacts page does not have - White Star CDF station - Tecate station - Dehesa Sta 25 - Lawson Valley sta - Lee Valley sta - Protero Reserve Station (mentioned in the 2016 Border Fire After Action Report)

Warner Springs Sta 52 is listed as 'state funded' and 'vol' on the CDF contacts page - but in the 2016 CDF County Plan the station is listed as having 3 CDF FF + 2 county FF + reserve FD - but no mention of Warner Springs Resort FD - ??? (does the Resort FD still exist? - are they self dispatched?)

La Jolla Reservation FD is not listed as a dispatch agreement agency on the CDF contacts page (on the CDF website) - but it is mentioned in the 2016 county cdf plan

Agencies that are dispatched by CDF but have their own staffing are - Borrego Springs + Julian Cuyamaca + the volunteer stations - per the cdf contacts page

Stations that are shared with vols are - Deerhorn Valley 37 (has vols and FT county ALS eng) - Harbison Canyon 24 (has vols and county funded stipend FFs) - Jacumba 43 (has vols and 1 schedule A FT eng staffed by CDF) - Jamul 36 (has vols and FT E36 and FT L36) - Ocotillo Wells 95 (has vols and 1 sched A FT engine) - Pine Valley 44 (vols and 1 sched A FT eng) - Warner Springs 52 (vols + CDF + county) - Boulevard 47 (vols and 1 summer CDF engine) - San Pasqual 84 (has vols and a San Diego City Eng daytimes)

"Schedule A" = structural engine operated by CDF firefighters

Volunteer only stations - that are dispatched by CDF are - Sunshine Summit 59 - Ranchita 58 - Dulzura 35 - Shelter Valley 98 - De Luz 18 - Palomar Mtn 79 - Mt Laguna 49 - Campo 46

Some of the volunteer stations have a CDF station nearby - some are all by themselves in the middle of nowheresville

I still show no fire station in San Ysidro ? Santa ysabel ? / just west of Julian - but there are 2 paid stations to the west, and 2 paid stations to the SE - very strange - maybe there is a Indian FD hiding there somewhere

Campo CDF and White Star CDF stations are both Amador stations - meaning that they have 1 CDF ty 3 engines staffed with 2 FF in the winter - paid for by the county

I think that several of the Schedule A engines in the rural areas just have 2 people on duty - but I cant confirm that yet

They seem to be adding some small patrol trucks in the rural areas also - maybe for roving patrols

It took me a while but I finally found the Tecate Station - https://www.google.com/maps/@32.5777812,-116.6299092,3a,75y,108.84h,83.81t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1siUYUk48ZJvKaWWwgA9exqQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1?hl=en - possibly it had 2 Ty 1 engines and a WT in 2012 - but it seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth since 2012

The "CDF only" stations are - White Star + Campo 40 + Cuyamaca 51 + De Luz 16 + Del Dios 77 + Dulzura 30 + Flinn Springs 21 + Julian 50 + Lyons Valley 32 + Miller 15 + Monte Vista 20 - Poterero 31 + Ramona 86 + Red Mountain 10 + Rincon 70 + Valley Center 71 + Witch Creek 87 - I would love to find out which stations have 2 engines and which stay open yearround

CDF 70 at Rincon has an equipment bay provided by the Yuima Water District - in return CDF covers the local housing development at the golf course - or something weird like that

Note - CDF staff dont have pagers (except maybe the bosses) - all CDF engines are Type 3 - any Ty 1 engines that are staffed by CDF FFs are owned by the county or a local government agency IIRC

Note - dont confuse Ramona CDF station for a Ramona Water District station

CDF Sta 71 at Valley Center might be right in the middle of the Valley Center FPD which has its own 2 stations IIRC

Sycuan Indian FD has a hotshot crew and a quint and 2 eng + 1 WT + 1 ALS engine

The US military has a bunch of fire stations in the City of San Diego

Marine Camp Pendleton has approx 10 fire stations of their own - 1 is shared with a USFS engine (at Case Springs) - that is very unique

The County has a contract with San Diego City FD to provide a water dropping helo at night. (SDCFD has 2 helos)

Electric Company provides 1 big water dropping helo

Sheriff dept has 3 big fire helos now - all 3 have 300 gallon tanks and at least 1 has a hoist - 1 sheriff helo is staffed with a CDF hand crew - they can fly in an construct a helispot - they must have to hike to the scene - they probably need a hoist or rapellers
