Highlight the physical & chemical properties on the board, have students describe what the properties are (especially the more challenging ones: conductivity, luster, malleability, etc.). Amazing Race Challenge Day, have this written on the board - challenge 1 exposed, challenge 2 & 3 behind the screen. Challenge 2, the PhET won't work on iPads, so borrow a few computers...sometimes they had to do the Gizmos (Challenge 3) first, then do challenge 2. Challenge 1: Can you make a mini submarine float, sink, then float again? Materials: film canister, water, Alka Seltzer, Pennies, Graduated Cylinder. Challenge 2: What is the identity of each of the 5 mystery objects? Materials: computer PhET 'Density' simulation, calculator, pencil, scratch paper. Challenge 3: List the objects from least dense to most dense. List the liquids from least dense to most dense. Materials: iPad, Gizmos 'Density' Simulation, calculator, pencil, scratch paper. There was only 1 group all day who finished all 3, have them watch a youtube on calculating Human Density. We were supposed to do that outside today, but it's way too cold during the spring semester.
