10) John Murphree

Composer, and sound installation artist John Murphree was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1976. He has a B.M. in Composition from the Berklee College of Music where his principle teacher was John Bavicchi, and has a M.M. in Composition from The Boston Conservatory where his principle teacher was Andy Vores. He has also studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts with sculptor Dennis Svoronos, making percussion instruments and building sound installations.

Murphree’s concert works have been performed in Europe and the U.S. His installations have been staged at the Mobius Gallery, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and in 2012 he was commissioned to install a new work at The Boston Conservatory entitled Doppler Piano. John was a Fellow in the Arts at the St. Botolph Club from 2009 – 2012. In 2011 he was chosen to collaborate in the Juddertone Choreography Concert, and he once led a team that built a xylophone made of ice and aluminum for Boston’s annual Chisels and Chainsaws ice sculpture competition.

Most recently John has been designing and fabricating original instruments that are used in his compositions and in live performance. Since 2009, John has been on the music theory faculty at The Boston Conservatory.
