Student Learning Profile

The learning profile can take on many forms, but to truly be useful it needs to be a student's understanding about who they are as a learner. No doubt from year to year it will change so it's important for them to archive their previous learning profile and update their profiles annually. The following questions may serve as prompts for the profile:

What do you like to learn about?

How do you think you learn best?

What are you most successful at?

What are your greatest challenges?

What are roadblocks to your learning?

How do you want your learning to impact your future?

What are three possible careers you might like to pursue?

Example Profile:

I am in 10th grade and when I’m not in school I hike, sail, bike and read. I also like music and often listen to Spanish music. I like to travel and save all my money from babysitting and working at the bike shop to put in a travel fund. When I travel, I like to visit museums, but also like to have fun as well.

I am an average student, but I know I could do better. I often find myself looking out the window because I can’t stand being cooped up. I am most successful at learning languages and spend hours playing with google translate and watching videos in Spanish. I have penpal friends in Spain and Argentina and write to them in English and they write to me in Spanish. I think I learn best when I can connect my learning to a real situation like writing to my pen pals. I want to travel to their countries and know I’d learn so much more about Spanish if I spent time there.

I also really like geography and maps and I love to write. I always write reviews from a teen's perspective for Tripadvisor and am a top contributor. I read sailing magazines and national geographic because you learn so much. I learn a lot about science because of National Geographic, and not because my teacher writes chemical equations on the board. (although I like research and some of the experiments we do are fun) I swear the only reason I know anything about the metric system is because of boats and traveling to Canada.

I am an active learner and hate being talked at. If the teacher is talking for more than 10 minutes I’m checked out. I much prefer when they give us some question and we discuss them in small groups and then share out. I don't mind watching movies in class, but honestly, I could do that at home. I also get that, especially in languages, I have to memorize some stuff. Quizlet is especially useful for me to use for memorizing because it gives me games and also practice tests and I can do it at my own pace. It also gives me the pronunciation so I can learn more independently. I can memorize things pretty easily, but I’m not as good at figuring out complex math problems. It frustrates me when I have a question and my math teacher only has a minute per class to actually check in with me.

After high school I want to go to college (maybe not immediately after high school). My dream job would to be to write for a travel magazine or be a novelist. I might also like to be a screenwriter or direct documentaries. To become prepared for a career in those areas, I plan to attend college, but want to take some online courses for writing first. I also want to spend next summer in Argentina with my penpal and write a blog about my experiences.
