Goal Setting

Goal Setting

Goal setting is one of the critical aspects of advisory. There are two types of goal setting which will occur in advisory. The first is academic goal setting. The intention of academic goal setting is to show students that success in any field requires goal setting. Some students do this naturally. Many need to be required to set goals so that goal setting will become an inherent part of their academic careers. Likewise, some goals may be performance specific whereas others may be content specific. It is reasonable to set a goal that you want to get all honors grades in your core classes or that you want to be accepted to the National Honor Society. However, If all your goals reflect "I want to get an "A" in physics or I want to get all my homework in on time, you need to also think about adding learning goals.Content goals also known as learning goals are more based on being able to demonstrate learning. For example "I want to be able to speak in the past tense in Spanish, or I want to be able to write using appropriate types of transitional words. As with all goals, academic goals can be short term (the quarter), medium term (the year) or long term (the year). You should develop goals that represent short, medium and long-term goals. Please read the following examples of academic goals.

Examples of academic goals are :

Getting all work in on time

Writing down assignments every night

Taking courses that will support my long term academic interests

Improving in my language arts course by writing with appropriate punctuation

Learning why it’s important to know the periodic chart

Goals will be stored in your electronic advisory folders that you create in September or carried over from last year.

The second type of goal setting is personal goal setting. Personal goal setting follows a similar process as academic goal setting, but are related to the non-academic sphere of your life. As with academic goal setting you need to recognize that personal successes are the result of goal setting.

Examples of personal goals are :

running 4 days a week

practicing the saxophone 3 times a week (this could also be academic)

not watching more than 7 hours of TV a week

put annual photo albums together

Reviewing goals : We will review your goals at least once a quarter during individual meeting time in advisory. The following are the questions you should reflect on for these meetings:

How are you progressing on your goals ?

What are the challenges you have encountered in achieving your goals ?

What are some ways you can overcome your challenges ?

Does your goal need to be modified ? If so, please rewrite your modified goal.
