Parent Protocol
Parent Protocol
Dear Parents and Family Members,
Thank you for participating in your student’s conference. The new format that we are using encourages students to take ownership of their learning and learn how to discuss their education.
The purpose of these conferences is for your student to:
· Share their work with you
· Practice communication skills
· Report on their progress
· Practice organizational skills
· Assess their work honestly
· Become accountable for their learning
In this conference, students will demonstrate their learning both through their successes and challenges. They have been preparing for their conferences during the past few weeks and will demonstrate to you their work for the first part of the conference.
There will be time for you to ask them about their learning and also time for you to confer with their teacher at the end of the conference.
Please remember that students may be nervous the first few times they participate in these conferences so please be patient and supportive. Your role as a listener and a partner in your student’s learning is highly appreciated.
Types of questions you may want to ask to discuss your student’s learning are listed below:
· Can you tell me about this piece or assignment?
· What did you have to do in the assignment?
· What skills did you have to use?
· What do you think you did well? Why?
· If you had to do this assignment again, what would you do to improve it?
Teacher note: You may or may not choose to send the parent protocol home with the student ahead of time, or pass it out as they arrive. This really depends on your level of comfort with how the students will present the process. We have provided one, but it is your call whether or not to use one.
