Dolly Parton’s Imagination LibraryGetting books into the hands of disadvantaged children through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program was a shared dream by Janet Segal and Patty Bennett-Uffelman that is finally coming true. Begin With Books is a pre-school literacy program focused in rural communities in Charleston County. Their goal is to improve the reading readiness of children in these communities by helping parents and grandparents encourage their kids, and also by providing each participating child a free book every month from Dolly’s Imagination Library. With a small contribution ($33), interested individuals can provide age-appropriate books for a year to be mailed directly to the child’s home. For $165, a complete library, which is 60 books over the course of 5 years, can be purchased for a child in need. The program initially got its start in Hollywood, Meggett, Ravenel, and Adams Run, and has spread rapidly. The Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation (a supporting organization of the Community Foundation) is funding a similar program throughout Georgetown County.
