BWB Continues on Johns Island: Program Provides Books for Children Birth to Age 5

Janet Segal first heard about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, through her grandson in 2009. Hospitalized in Tennessee, the program was providing him with one new book a month and after pouring through the latest story, he couldn’t wait for the next one to arrive. An avid bibliophile herself, Segal partnered with entrepreneur Patty Bennett-Uffelman to bring the program to their hometown of Charleston, South Carolina.

Today, Segal and Bennett have already launched Begin with Books programs in several of Charleston County’s most rural areas including Hollywood, Meggett, and Adam’s Run. And now they’re working with a wonderful team of local volunteers to make the program available to the children of Johns and Wadmalaw islands.
