Biography:

Brookes family lived on New Windsor Road. Ewen attended Avondale School June 1901 to June 1906.

Lieutenant Ewen McLean Brookes, killed in action, was the youngest son of the late Mr. A. E. and Mrs. Brookes, of Allendale Road, Mount Albert, and was 24 years of age when he met his death. At the outbreak of war he enlisted for active service, and was drafted as a gunner to the second battery. He was appointed range-finder, and in this capacity went through the training of the main expeditionary force in Egypt. He served right through the Gallipoli campaign, being on the headquarters staff for some time. On the return of the Anzacs to Egypt he was appointed instructor, and eventually left for France, where he gained his commission. Previous to the outbreak of war he was range-finder in the F Battery, and was a very keen yachtsman. At the time of his enlistment he was employed on the clerical staff of Messrs. Winstone, Limited. He was killed in action 4 October 1916.
