Biography:

Born 17 March 1884, son of John Barker of Avondale, Barker was a driver working for W Pooley of Avondale before he enlisted in August 1914, and lived on Windsor Road (Wingate Street) Avondale. He served in Egypt and Gallipoli.

He was discharged in May 1919 as no longer physically fit for service, having contracted an illness while in the service. He was still living at Wingate Street in the mid 1930s.

In "dire circumstances", according to a letter on his military file, he applied to enter the Veterans Home at Three Kings in 1952 (now Ranfurly Home). He died at Avondale in 1954.
