Star of Avondale Oddfellows Lodge Roll

Auckland Star 22 June 1917 p.6

Some 200 Avondale residents assembled in the Avondale Town Hall last night to assist Mr C J Parr, MP for Eden, in unveiling a roll of honour of members of Star of Avondale. No. 63, IOOF. Noble Grand Bro. R. Ward occupied tbe chair, and in a forcible speech stated that out of a membership of 78 Lodge Star of Avondale had sent 34 of its members to fight for their King and country. It was his great pleasure to state that the Lodge at the present moment did not contain one man who was eligible for the front. Out of the 34 brave lads who had gone to the front it was his sad duty to say that four had given their lives, viz.. V F Vause, L. Ryan, F A Crum, and R C Flaxman. Bro. Ward also stated that at the next installation of the Lodge two brothers who had been to the front and done their duty were to be installed into the two highest positions of the Lodge.

Mr. Garry sang "Till the Boys Come Home," the audience joining in the chorus. Mr Parr said he was proud to be with them, first because as their member of the House of Representatives, and secondly because he also was an Oddfellow. He was proud of the great record Star of Avondale Lodge had put up a record -- than which there was none better in the Dominion. Mr. Parr then unveiled the roll of honour, all standing. District Orand Master Bro. Cooper addressed the brethren and audience. He said he was glad to do honour to the brave men whose names were before him. Friendly societies throughout the Dominion totalled 6000 members. Oddfellows had sent upwards of 1000 men to the front, and in Auckland alone 230 men had been sent. Bro. Ward contributed the song "Somewhere in France," and then he called on Mr. Parr, who spoke on "Great Men of Britain.''

The roll was at the Oddfellows rooms, then the Oddfellows Hall in St Georges Road. At present, it is in the entry foyer to the Avondale RSA, Layard Street.
