Biography:

Born in Mt Eden 14 April 1895. Before enlisting 8 March 1916 (2nd battalion, Auckland Regiment) worked as a clerk for Abel Dyke's Ltd. His father was R S Abel, of Avondale South. He was killed in action in France 1 September 1918. (military file)

Private advice has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Abel of the death in action of their second son, Lieut. Howard Abel. Deceased was an old Grammar School boy, and left for the front with the Sixteenth Reinforcements in 1916, being in the infantry. He was wounded in the shoulder Iast April, but was able to return to duty, and has now made the supreme sacrifice for his country. (Star 10 September 1918)
