Biography:

Born in Auckland 17 February 1896, Barker lived in Windsor (Wingate) Street with his father John Henry BARKER (originally from Napier), and worked as a motor mechanic for E Horland, Factory Road, Auckland, before enlisting in September 1917.

"John H. Barker, Avondale, appealed on the grounds of undue hardship and occupation. Appellant stated that two of his brothers were on active service, and tho other two were in the Second Division. He was looking after a small orchard for his parents, his father being an invalid, and quite unable to work. The appeal on the ground of occupation was supported by Messrs. Horland and Gillett, his employers, it being stated by Mr. Holland that Barker, a motor-mechanic, working at gear-cutting and milling, was the only employee who could perform this work.' Exemption until January 11 was granted." (NZH 26 September 1917, p. 8)

Discharged 14 March 1919 "no longer fit for war service on account of wounds received in action." He died in Auckland 1 February 1964. (military file)
