At Westvlereten we visited the grave of Major Cecil Herbert Shepherd-Cross DSO, DLOY... He was the son of Herbert Shepherd-Cross the MP for Bolton and a former officer in the DLOY. On the 1911 census Major Shepherd-Cross is shown as living in Long Preston, Cheshire with his wife, three children and nine servants. His occupation is shown as "cotton manufacturer"... At the start of the war Major Shepherd-Cross was OC 'D' Sqn, DLOY. He was firstly attached to the Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry then later 197 Coy, Machine Gun Corps….. He was wounded in action during the battle of Passchendaele whilst giving flank covering fire on an attack. He was evacuated to one of the casualty clearing stations at Westvlereten which the troops had nicknamed Dozinghem. He died of his wounds on 15 Oct 1917 and is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery. Grave No. X.I.10...Lol laid a poppy wreath in remembrance....RIP
