The South African Memorial at Delville Wood near Longueval

The South African Memorial at Delville Wood near Longueval. The wood was known to the troops as Devils Wood. The 1st South African Brigade captured most of the wood on 15 July 1916 as part of the larger Battle of Bazentin Ridge and held on for five days despite repeated German counter attacks. British attacks and German counter attacks continued for a further seven weeks. Three VC's were won during the fighting in the wood. Of the 766 South Africans who died there 633 have no known grave....RIP
