The winter solstice occurs exactly when the Earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun. Though the solstice actually lasts only a moment in time, the term turns to a point in time when there is a turning point to midwinter. Worldwide, the solstice has an interpretation which has varied from culture to culture, but most cultures have held recognition of rebirth, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations around that time.
I felt it was fitting that I address this message to you right after the Winter Solstice, December 21st, as it represents a type of rebirth for the Democrats to me. I believe we have a chance this year to make our county Blue in the election cycle of 2011. Much work needs to be done, but first we should spend valuable time with our families during those spiritual celebrations you and yours celebrate. This is the time for special bonding when families come together, sometimes from far away, to spend a little time before the New Year starts with all its promises. It is also a time to think about our family members who may be in the armed forces, as well as those less fortunate than us.
I hope you enjoy your family time together, and will contact you after the New Year to let you know what is planned for Area 11. Best wishes for a wonderful Holiday and a safe and Happy New Year.
Democratically yours,
Olivia
