D Pit Row / Dee Pit Row

As the name suggests, D (or "Dee") Pit Row was a row of houses located at the Lambton D Pit, located just to the east of New Lambton in the centre of what would have been a very industrial area.

As can be clearly seen from both the above map and images, the houses were constructed extremely near to the pit and would have accommodated not only pitmen but those employed in the associated industries. It should be remembered that there were several pits within walking distance of D Pit Row, the second closest being the Lady Ann Pit just a few hundred yards away. To illustrate the size of this settlement, the 1841 census for "Dee Pit" consisted of 26 households.
