"The Biodiversity Indicators for National Use (BINU) Project:  Biodiversity Trends Threats in Europe, SW Ukrainian Butterflies"

The Biodiversity Indicators for National Use (BINU) Project is sponsored by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and others, with the aim to develop biodiversity indicators to support planning and decision-making at the national-level in four participating countries. The project is coordinated by the UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge (UK). In Ukraine the project is led by the Ukrainian Land and Resource Management Centre (ULRMC) and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, focusing on biodiversity indicators for agro-ecosystems. The results of the project will be published at the end of 2004, and communicated to the State Committee on Land Resources of Ukraine, the State Statistical Committee, and the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The final reports will include a national report on the state and pressures of agroecosystems in Ukraine, based on the indicators which have been developed. Data on trends in the butterfly populations of Ukraine would be a very significant contribution to this report and all sources will be fully acknowledged. Data will only be used in aggregations, i.e. the raw data on single species in single habitats will not be published. It is intended that the work of the project will be continued beyond 2004 to support relevant policy formation in Ukraine, and it would be most welcome if data from Butterfly Conservation Europe could form part of these actions for biodiversity conservation.`
