The struggle for justice for disappeared people's families - REPORT - 29/08/2025
Following the fall of the government of Bashar al-Assad, the president, on 08 December 2024, amid immense joy, many families of disappeared people were also thrust into a new form of agony. When detention centres and prisons were opened, images of people forcibly disappeared inside Syria's notorious prison system who were finally freed and able to return home flooded mobile telephones. But, for the majority of families, the loved ones they had waited years for did not emerge. Nine months later, families of those forcibly disappeared by the former government, as well as those disappeared by armed groups, are continuing their long struggle to uncover the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones. They want to know what happened to them, to recover the remains of those that died, and to see those responsible held to account. Read more.

Abduction of Alawite women and girls must be investigated - NEWS - 28/07/2025
The Syrian government must urgently step up efforts to prevent gender-based violence and promptly, thoroughly and impartially investigate cases of abducted and kidnapped Alawite women and girls, and hold perpetrators accountable. Read more.
On 09 March 2025, a fact-finding committee was established to investigate the killings of civilians on Syria's northewest coast. Ahead of the submission of findings, President al-Sharaa must commit to publishing the full findings. Read more.
The Syrian government must ensure that the perpetrators of a wave of mass killings taregeting Alawite civilians in coastal areas are held accountable and take immediate steps to ensure that no person or group is targeted based on their sect. Read more.
Following reports that hundreds of civilians, mostly from the Alawite minority, had been killed, Amnesty International had called on the Syrian authorities to act swiftly to ensure civilians are protected in any ongoing or future fighting and to prevent further unlawful killings and other violations.
