Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough
To know when he is weak and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid;
One who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,
And humble, and gentle in victory.
Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds;
A son who will know Thee–and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.
Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
Here, let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those that fail.
Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.
And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously.
Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.
Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, "I have not lived in vain."
오 신이시여, 제게 이런 아들을 주소서.
약할 때에 자신을 분별할 수 있는 힘과
두려울 때 자신을 잃지 않는 용기를 주소서.
정직한 패배 앞에 당당하고 태연하며,
승리의 때에 겸손하고 온유한 사람이 되게 하소서.
내 아이가 이런 사람이 되게 하소서.
자신의 본분을 자각하여
하나님과 자신을 아는 것이
지식의 기초임을 깨닫는 사람이 되게 하소서.
그를 요행과 안락의 길로 이끌지 마시고,
자극받아 분발하도록 고난과 도전의 길로 인도하소서.
모진 비바람을 견뎌내게 하시고,
실패한 자를 긍휼히 여길 줄 아는 사람이 되게 하소서.
내 아이가 이런 사람이 되게 하소서.
마음이 깨끗하고 높은 이상을 품은 사람,
남들을 다스리기 전에 먼저 자신을 다스리는 사람,
웃을 줄 알면서도 우는 법을 결코 잊지 않는 사람,
미래를 향해 전진하면서도
과거를 결코 잊지 않는 사람이 되게 하소서.
이 모든 것들 외에 그에게 유머 감각을 주소서.
그리하면 항상 진지하면서도
결코 지나치게 심각해지지는 않을 것입니다.
그에게 겸손을 가르쳐주소서.
그리하면 진정한 위대함은 소박하며,
진정한 지혜는 열려 있으며,
진정한 힘은 너그럽다는 것을
언제나 기억할 것입니다.
그 애가 이런 사람이 되었을 때
저는 감히 그에게 속삭일 것입니다.
내가 인생을 결코 헛되이 살지 않았노라고.
