From 1st September 1894 the Post Office allowed customers to stick a stamp on a postcard and send it for a halfpenny (½d). 1902 saw the arrival of the 'divided back' design that we know today, with a picture on one side and the message and address on the other. This began the history of the picture postcard as we know it. Vast numbers of cards were produced and sent. Now postcards from this golden age are a valuable resource for historians. Photographic cards record long-vanished scenes, the messages written on the back can be fascinating and the edgy humour of the comic postcard is legendary.
Michael Miller of Surrey Postcard Club illustrates his talk with many examples from his collection.
