About Acorns History Group
Acorns History Group was formed in 2009, following a two-year course on Local History run by Matthew Alexander at Guildford Museum, which was attended by the founder members. We are interested in the history of Guildford and Shalford in a wide context. We are a history group with an interest in local affairs, and we encourage members to present talks on subjects of their choice, at our regular meetings. The group normally meets every other Tuesday morning (with a summer break) from 10 am until about 12 noon . All meetings are currently held at St Mary the Virgin Church, Shalford (GU4 8BP map and directions here - car parking at the church), unless otherwise noted in the programme.
Membership costs £17 per calendar year, plus £5 is charged for each meeting, inclusive of tea or coffee during the mid-morning interval. Visitors are welcome and are requested to pay £6 per meeting for expenses. Members joining after 1st July pay a reduced membership fee of £6 for the remainder of the year.
Outdoor meetings
No charge is made for these meetings, but some will involve entry and guide fees.
Members' meetings
At each of these popular meetings, two or three members speak for about 30 – 45 minutes on a subject of their choice.
Programme changes
Occasionally, speakers may not be able to attend. In these cases, we will attempt to organise alternative speakers. If the weather is bad, please check our website - https://sites.google.com/site/acornshistory for information on whether the meeting is on or off. We will attempt to update it by 9am on the day of the meeting.
Future programme
We welcome your ideas, so if you know of an interesting speaker, please tell us.
