Why did the North and South of England develop such contrasting cricket cultures? While the answer is ‘competition’ and the form it took and the meanings attributed to it, the ‘who, how and why?’ behind these distinct regional identities centre on the socioeconomic and demographic development of London and the Home Counties from the late nineteenth century.
Duncan Stone is a historian who has long interested been in the 'cultural war' waged over sport in Britain. He is the author of a book - "Different Class: The Untold Story of English Cricket".
