Think like an Engineer

Welcome!

We are really pleased that you can be part of this exciting programme developed by Maker{Futures} at The University of Sheffield and funded by The Royal Academy of Engineering.

We have worked with real engineers from a range of engineering backgrounds to develop ten class projects for you to use in school. This site has all the information you need to run an engineer inspired project in your class.

Your school is one of twenty-five primary schools from the region taking part.

The aims of the programme are:

  1. to introduce schools to maker education with a STEM and DT focus.

  2. to provide schools with engaging maker-based projects that can provide enrichment opportunities during COVID-19 restrictions.

  3. to provide a connection between schools and local engineers to help children better understand what engineers do.

  4. to support engineers with public engagement and outreach.

We would love to see how you are getting on. Tag us in

How will pupils 'Think Like an Engineer?'

Throughout the project, children will be encouraged to ‘think like an engineer’ using the following three elements.

Maker{Cycle}

Pupils use the Maker{Cycle} to evolve and *iterate their ideas and prototypes. Children begin to understand that making improvements is key to being able to 'think like an engineer'.

*iterate by this we mean revisiting ideas to improve them

"Meet an engineer"

Each project has been inspired by engineers from different areas of engineering. Our engineers have recorded a little welcome message for each activity.

You can also book your class into a Meet the Engineers video call, where pupils can ask them questions about what they do and the projects you are working on.

"Be an engineer volunteer"

Our engineers introduce tinker time in a short video, providing an authentic context for the final activity. This is motivating for pupils who love the opportunity to work in real-life scenarios.

This is Engineering

This is Engineering is a UK national campaign to bring engineering to life for young people, and give more people the opportunity to pursue a career that is rewarding, future-shaping, varied, well-paid, and in-demand.

This video is designed to show young people what engineering really looks like, and how it could be an exciting aspiration.

Help & support

We want to support you and your class throughout your project and are always here to help.

  1. Email us to ask questions or ask for help and guidance.

  1. Book an online call with Alison Buxton to discuss your project and any questions you might have. This could be a single teacher, a cluster of teachers or a class call if children wish to ask questions. Email alison.buxton@sheffield.ac.uk to arrange.
