PGT students cannot receive a 5 or 10 working day deadline extension for the dissertation, final portfolio/assessment, or linked assessments due on the same day. This includes:
JNL6019: Radio/TV Portfolio, Critical Appraisal, & Placement Reflection (due 21/08/25).
JNL6090: Portfolio and Critical Commentary (due 21/08/25)
JNL6300: IPPC Dissertation (due 26/08/25)
JNL61005: Journal Article and Non-Academic Audiences Project (due 26/08/25)
If, for good reason, you are unable to submit the above assessments by the deadline, you can request to extend your studies. This would mean that you would instead submit your final assessment(s) by 28th January 2026.
In order to apply for this, you must only have one of the above modules to complete. If you have any other outstanding modules to complete you must repeat the year. You also cannot extend your studies if you have submitted and failed or received a mark of NA for any of the above assessments. Again here you would need to repeat the year.
If you receive an extension to studies, you will be unable to graduate with your cohort at January 2026 graduation. Once your final piece of work has been marked, and the School’s recommendation for your degree award and classification are approved by Faculty, your degree will be conferred in absentia. Further information about this can be found on our Conferments in Absentia webpage.
Additionally, if you are an overseas student, an Extension to Studies can impact your visa. Please see Study/time limit extensions webpage for further information on this.
Please ensure you carefully read the information on the Extend Your Postgraduate Studies page which includes guidance on the implications of extending your studies.
Requests to extend studies can be made from 14th June 2025 up to five working days after your final submission deadline.
To request to extend your studies, you should email journalism@sheffield.ac.uk and copy your dissertation/final project supervisor into the email and we will discuss the process with you further.
