The following are key requirements for MA Broadcast Journalism students in order that your degree is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC).
You are required to attend 15 newsdays across the year. These will be timetabled in semesters 1 and 2. You will get the chance to experience a number of different roles, including TV/radio presenter and reporter, podcast presenter, camera and TV gallery operator, and multimedia journalist for web and social media. You will respond to breaking news from around South Yorkshire and learn all the skills needed to work in a newsroom. Attendance at all 15 newsdays is compulsory.
You are required to complete at least 15 days of work placements during the year. Five of these days must be consecutive. These must be taken in vacation time. This is a compulsory element of the course and extremely important to gain entry into the journalism industry. The placements are not formally assessed but there is an attendance requirement.
You will have personal voice training with a professional broadcaster. This will consist of four 45-minute individual sessions working on skills like enunciation, breathing, and storytelling.
