Being clear about your wants, needs, and priorities during your employability journey is essential for making it work for you. Everyone's experience will be different; therefore, taking time to focus on knowing what you want can help you feel confident about your journey and goals and how these can help you make the most out of your university experience. You can use this activity and adapt it for all different aspects of your life (helping you know what you want from your academic experience at university, know what you want from your social life, etc), and as long as you have a clear topic that you are focusing on, you can use this to help you feel confident in your own aspirations. The activity below focuses on helping you know what you want from your employability development. Answer the questions below to help you understand what you want and why you want this. You can return to this activity as many times as needed to evaluate your goals and ensure you are always keeping yourself on track.

What would achieving these options allow you to do?
How would you feel if you achieved these options?
Do these feel realistic and achievable? Why/why not?
Is there a career/industry/role you immediately imagine would help you achieve these options?
How could you find options for your future career that help you achieve these options?
How might these options influence your employability journey?
Are there any opportunities you could explore that could help you try some of these options before your future career?
What would happen if you did not achieve these options?
How could you see your choices changing in the future?
What other options might become more/less important in the future?
Knowing what is important to you and what you would like to achieve in a future career can help you explore what you might want to do after you graduate. This can then allow you to find opportunities that can help you experience these options and understand exactly why you want these options. For example, if you think that you want Creative Freedom in your future career, you could explore what kind of jobs prioritise creativity and independent work to help you feel that Creative Freedom. Once you have identified the careers that champion Creative Freedom, you can then find relevant work experiences, develop skills that are essential to these careers, and feel confident knowing you can find a career that will allow you to have all the things that are important to you.
This knowledge is a really useful starting point for your employability journey and can help you have a clear focus (and understand what you benefit from this focus). Use the answers to these questions to write down exactly what you want. You can use the links below to help you create a next-step to-do list to outline what you need to do next in your journey to get you closer to making what you want happen.
