To work on any of the instrument in our lab independently, you will need to complete both the Royce Discovery Centre (RDC) building induction and the Nanocharacterisation Laboratory induction to gain access to the lab. After completing these inductions, you will need to undergo a training session for the specific instrument you plan to use. Please refer to the following sections on this page for detailed instructions on how to proceed with the building induction, lab induction and training request.
To access the lab, you must first complete the building induction for the Royce Discovery Centre (RDC) Harry Brearley Building, where the lab is located. Please complete the RDC building induction on the website here.
If you have any enquires about the building induction, please email royce_admin@sheffield.ac.uk. Building inductions can take up to one week to process.
If you have previously been inducted into another area of the RDC, you do not need to repeat the building induction.
Before accessing the lab, you need to complete a few steps to ensure that you understand the important safety precautions that we have implemented.
Read the laboratory induction document, linked here.
Watch the induction video, linked here.
Complete the induction checklist form, linked here.
Before beginning work in the Nanocharacterisation Facility, please read the Risk Assessments relevant to your tasks and sign the form to confirm your understanding. Please note that the “Standard Work in the Nanocharacterisation Facility” RA must be read and confirmed by everyone working in the lab, regardless of which equipment you use.
Please note steps 1 to 4 are compulsory for all users. If you are requiring access and training to the LUMICKS C-Trap optical tweezer in C12b, please carefully read the appendix section in the lab induction document and also complete the request form in addition to completing steps 1 to 4, linked here.
In case you also need to access the Materials Chemistry Lab (C06) for your sample preparation, please send an email to rdc_materials-chemistry@sheffield.ac.uk stating within the email body that you would like an 'induction'. You should receive an automated reply and please follow the instructions in the email to complete the induction procedures to gain your access.
Once you have completed the Nanocharacterisation Lab induction checklist form, we will process your induction information. We will let you know by email when this has been completed.
After completing the lab induction, you may request training sessions on instruments as needed, following the instructions in the next section. If you need additional training sessions later and have previously completed the lab induction, you are encouraged to review the induction information, but there is no need to refill the checklist form.
You may request training sessions on any instrument (except the LUMICKS C-Trap that you should follow the instructions in the induction session above) in the Nanocharacterisation Lab by completing the form (linked here). We will get back to you via email to confirm the details of available training slot(s).
We aim to fully support everyone with our state-of-the-art facility, so we are waiving all additional costs for training sessions, charging only the basic instrumental time rate. Our standard training sessions are 8 hours for AFM (an extra 2 h driving test session is also necessary), 4 hours for nanoindentation, and 2 hours for optical profilometry. You are welcome to discuss any special requests, and we can adjust the training plan to meet your needs, if necessary. For any enquiries, please contact us at nanochar@sheffield.ac.uk.
