Fig 1 and Fig 2 show a circuit used to create an Astable pulse.
Both of these circuits look very different, but they are in fact the same circuit.
When we first look for a circuit in a book or other sources of information, we will undoubtedly be given a circuit diagram like the one shown in Fig 2.
In order to get this circuit to work, we must produce a real life prototype circuit so that we can check to see if it functions as required.
Breadboards can seem quite complicated, but they are in fact quite simple when you understand how they work.
The arrows on Fig 3 show how the holes in a breadboard are connected electrically. The outer sets are connected horizontally and the inner sets are connected vertically with a gap (or trough) in the centre.

The most important thing to remember when using prototype board is that all of the components must be connected together exactly as they are in the circuit diagram or they will not work, i.e. in Fig 1. Pin number 1 on the chip is connected to the negative voltage rail exactly as it is in the circuit diagram.
