Class Rank/Grade Point Average/Quality Point Average:
Grade point average (GPA) is determined by adding all final class averages and dividing by the number of credits attempted inclusively. This average is not used to determine class rank. Here is a google sheet that can be used to track and calculate unweighted GPA at will - Unweighted Calculator Link .
Credit values can be found in the Program of Studies under their respective departments.
Class rank is a system by which students are compared to their classmates according to their Quality Point Average (QPA). Colleges utilize their own algorithms which are not associated with Seymour High School when awarding QPA and ranking when comparing students both within Seymour High School and as compared to other students outside of Seymour High School. Colleges may use this information to assess a student’s performance in relation to his/her peers in order to make appropriate admissions decisions.
All seniors will be ranked with the exception of:
Transfer students to Seymour High School who have been enrolled for less than three (3) semesters.
Class Rank and GPA will be computed after:
Six semesters – Distributed to all seniors in October and will be composed of the final numeric grade in all credit courses taken in grades 9 through 11.
Final class rank, for the purpose of determining the top 10 students for graduation, will be completed for the top 15 sixth semester students only, after the completion of the 7th semester.
All classes are included in the calculation of GPA and QPA excluding Pass/Fail subjects
The QPA is determined by multiplying all final average grades with their Quality Point Values (College Prep Courses QPV = 1.0, Honors and Dual Enrollment Courses QPV = 1.1, Advanced Placement Courses QPV = 1.2) divided by the number of credits (not classes) attempted inclusively. The student’s quality point average (QPA) is calculated to determine class rank.
QPA and credit values can be found in the Program of Studies under their respective departments.
The QPA calculator can be found here.
Examples:
(Credit Value of the Course) X (Grade Earned) X (QPV) = QPA
Full-year courses
College Prep Class grade of 1 X 87 X 1.0 = 87.0 Quality Points
Honors Course grade of 1 X 87 X 1.1 = 95.7 Quality Points
Advance Placement grade of 1 X 87 X 1.2 = 104.4 Quality Points
Semester courses
College Prep Class grade of 0.5 X 87 X 1.0 = 43.5 Quality Points
Honors Course grade of 0.5 X 87 X 1.1 = 47.85 Quality Points
Advance Placement grade of 0.5 X 87 X 1.2 = 52.2 Quality Points
Laboratory courses with credit value greater than 1.0
College Prep Class grade of 1.0 X 87 X 1.0 = 87 Quality Points
Honors Course grade of 1.25 X 87 X 1.1 = 119.625 Quality Points
Advance Placement grade of 1.5 X 87 X 1.2 = 156 .6 Quality Points
