Sewanhaka's New Guidance Office

Here at Sewanhaka, the guidance office has undergone a complete makeover. In March, renovations were recently unveiled following its lengthy construction process, revealing a new and improved modern, sophisticated design.

As many of us already know, accommodations were made to facilitate this process. The guidance office was temporarily moved to the library, and the library was moved to the faculty dining hall. Despite this, teachers, students, counselors, and faculty adapted to these changes, and persevered through the challenges posed.

Librarian Mr. Mirsky said, “I think the new guidance office is great. While it was definitely a little frustrating being downstairs at times, it was totally worth it for everyone involved… and having been through this similar situation in the past when we had a new library built which also displaced people, I understand that it was necessary to make the school a better place.”

“The new Counseling Center has been such an incredible addition to our building. It has been absolutely wonderful to be able to work in a space that aesthetically has been beautifully put together for students and families to be welcomed into, but also a space that is more equitable for each Counseling Center staff member to really create their office area into their own. The temporary shift to the library already feels so long ago however, the library staff, Counseling Center staff, students and families being so accommodating during that time period needs to be noted” stated guidance counselor Ms. Elias.

Students also hold opinions surrounding the shift, with sophomore Ipsaan Sedhai saying, “I’m happy with the construction of the new guidance office. However, the temporary library posed some challenges. If I wanted to borrow books that weren’t immediately available in the impromptu library, it would be a whole process where Mr. Mirsky would have to go upstairs and bring them down.”

Despite all of the hiccups on the road, students and faculty worked through the challenges, which allowed for the construction of our new guidance office. As such, the new guidance office is a sign of the strength and familial bond we share at Sewanhaka. During tough times, we stick together and work hard to achieve our goals. We adapt and accommodate each other’s needs, and ensure that success is always fulfilled. The hard work, determination, and dedication have all culminated in this new chapter, one which will only continue to grow, improve, and prosper.
