Five Skiers Found Dead in the Swiss Alps, One Still Missing

Imagine yourself with family and friends going on a trip to the mountains either skiing, snowboarding, or even just to see the view. It would surely be a remarkable experience for you and your loved ones. This was what a group of skiers thought when scaling up the mountains to ski on March 11th. Yet they would’ve never foreseen the devastating event that would soon kill them.

A family of five and a friend decided to go skiing on the Swiss Alps on a Saturday yet they went missing for a couple of days until Anjan Truffer and his team found 5 of the skiers’ dead bodies. It has been thought that they had unfortunately encountered a snowstorm and there were reports of some snow caves at the scene. However, the skiers’ efforts were in vain as the harsh temperatures up in the Alps took their lives. Five out of the six skiers have been found under the blanket snow and it is thought that the last skier fell into a crevice. It’s been noted how the unpreparedness of the skiers led to their deaths as they didn’t bring adequate supplies, like a shovel, in case of emergencies like this. Rameesha Ahmad, a freshman at Sewanhaka High School says “Reasons such as this are why safety regulations for climbers should be put in place since we don’t fully know if these emergencies can happen on top of the mountains.”

The skiers have yet to be identified but the age range is 21-58 years old. According to the rescue team, they were wearing light clothing and speculated that they were practicing for a skiing competition and didn’t have clothes thick enough for the harsh blizzard conditions. Sarina Jubaer, another freshman at Sewanhaka High School, states “It is extremely unfortunate that the skiers have died from the cold just because they were unprepared with light clothing. Even when they knew what to do when stuff like this happens when they were trying to build their snow cave but because of unpreparedness, they were unsuccessful.” It is such a tragedy that a couple of skiers didn’t expect the weather to change so quickly and died from this fatal accident. This goes to show how people need to take more precautions since anything can go wrong at any time.
