Contrary to the idea of shrine as a institutional form we tried to reimagine the idea of form shrine and spaces around the shrine through syntax.
We started the module by finding a roadside shrine, I selected a shrine in Dadar east, on Dada saheb Phalke Marg. This site is in midst of a busy station road having many food stalls around it and the shrine becomes a central point for this food stall vendors as well as it becomes an extension of houses of residential people around.
We then documented the site through drawings as well as models
We then used collage as a way to extract the element of the site. Often such spaces are seen to be as a messy space, collage helped us catch hold this messiness, this sense of various texture and the liviness of the site.
I tried various iterations of collage to understand the site more better. By the last collage, that further helped to get the syntax of the site I recognized various elements of site. There are various planes in which various activities take place,
as well as there are various verticals which makes a frame like structure all over the site, which became main element to extract the syntax.
By a way of grouping and segregating I made an design intervention (iteration 1) in which the reds denoted the usable and sitting space whereas the bigger blocks of white blue and yellow segregated the same space into various different blocks which acted individually as a response to its usability
Taking inspiration from the Sol LeWitt's Incomplete cubes I tried to derive a form of an individual cube which is incomplete in itself.
Then thinking of form as a whole I tried to clear the pathway which was before covered by the shop to make a clear pathway by making a throughfare. Along with it the space is created as seating, storage, pockets for plants and various other things
DESIGN ITERATIONS-
In the final iteration as well this tiny cubes became a whole structure responding to various functions in each individual block. I also took inspiration from Sou Fujimoto's Serpentine Pavillion to get the idea of thinness of each member and to develop the idea of openness. The site is formed into a floating transparent structure which increases more amount of interation in midst of busy road.
