Location : Gorai Khadi
Site Photos :
This Christian shrine is located at the U-turn at Gorai Khadi, where there is the Gorai Jetty point nearby.
The market settles around the shrine which helps the local economy and there is also a fish market behind the Ram mandir
There is also a bus and rickshaw stand at the site as well as a local who sells coconut juice, with the market and the Gorai jetty, the entire space becomes an area of dynamic people flow where people either come to buy vegetables from the local market or to go to the Gorai jetty, so the Shrine becomes an important element of the space ; in terms of landmark and creating a space suitable for a market to settle and grow.
At night time the entire road is almost devoid of any traffic or obstacles, so it becomes a good spot to go for a drive, with people turning around the shrine and heading back.
Due to the proximity of a smoke shope, majorly men are seen at night around the site, coming via motorbikes or scooters, and hanging around at the space with cigarettes.

Plan :
In the plan the crowdedness and the kind of conjuncture the market, the jetty and the mandir create in the space. As the vehicles can be seen parked on one side of the shrine and the market settling on the other side and growing into the surrounding area.
The crowd is seen to be dense around the entrance of the jetty and the area surrounding the shrine
Elevation :
In the elevation drawing, the density of the crowd can be seen clearer. People are all around the place making the shrine a central piece around which the life there settles.
Collage :
I tried to capture the amount of conversations that really build the site for what it is. It's the kind of talks that give the site it's character and the shrine then acts as a central physical spot for these activities.
The layout of the conversations are lined up according to the market place area and the gorai jetty entrance.
The space has that characteristics, due to the amount of conversations that take place around the shrine and the U-turn
I tried to translate those conversations, into a physicality, but coffee washing the backdrop and utitlising torn newspaper to have the density and the haphazardness of the space.
The shrine and the planter line, are the elements that sort of but a break or barrier to the conversations there.
Process drawings and models
In these drawings i was trying to explore the idea of the stepped garden being the shrine. Also how the same stepped garden can acommodate the parking space for the vehicles as well as a space for the vegetable vendors to settle and sell their vegetables.
The concept of the stepped garden with steps or plinths being modulated to create spaces for resting and for other activities which can fuse syntax with architectonics and as well as the spatiality was something which was interesting to me.
I associated my design to the kind of feeling orchestral music has, orchestral music has a very crude and a very evident crescendo, which i wanted to bring into my design.
I tried different ratios and proportions of the steps which would enhance my design and help bring out the orchestra which the structure was trying to compose and communicate.
With this model i tried to iterate the steps and was just trying to see how would the structure would, potentially look in reality. What further more can be done to improve the design and meet the concept i was having in mind.
I had gotten the scale of the steps down, but the design was missing the variations on different dimensions, which would coincidentally relate to the kind of flows orchestra music has.
I explored further on the variations i would like the structure to have and i was satisfied with the proportions and the relations the steps had with each other.
Ideation 1 :
This design iteration was one of my crucial points in the process, as it helped me get the scale down, and allowed me to interepret what was needed to be done.
The height of the structure was too large, it would just look enormous in the site context and not really fit in . This is also the point where i understood of the concept of bringing the symphony in to the design, the symphony was brought in by the variations of the steps; their heights and the lengths and widths.
The vendors were still missing a roof and i had to acommodate one for them as well as a large enough space on the stepped garden itself for the people to come and rest on it.
This is my last ideation, where the things that were missing in the design were added. Like the cantilevered steps which would by themselves act as a roof for the vendors and also be a large enough space for people to rest in.
The shrine needs a large enough space for the people to come and rest. It acts as a thinking space, so it needs to match that criteria.
Model :
In the last model, the ratios and proportions of the steps were making much more sense according to the design concept i had in mind, the cantilevers were also there to shade and act as a shading device. Although incomplete
