Jean Scott

About:

Jean Tonniges Scott earned an A.A. in Music at Mesa College. She was awarded an “SDSU Music Scholarship” and earned a B.A. from San Diego State University in “Music”. That was followed by a graduate California Single Subject Teaching Credential in “Music”.

While in college, Jean began her teaching career as a dance teacher for Chula Vista Parks and Recreation Department for six years and a music teacher for Redfield’s El Cajon Music Store. She learned early that she wanted to teach and follow in her mother’s footsteps.

In 1978, she opened “Chula Vista Dance and Music School” and was responsible for all aspects of running the business for fifteen years. At the same time, Jean earned a B.S. in Dance followed by a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, both from San Diego State University in 1984.

Jean began teaching three levels of her popular fee-based “Adult Tap Classes” in 1984, which she continued instructing for San Diego Community Colleges through the East San Diego Campus for ten years.

In 1985, Jean began her Music Appreciation Classes for older adults with the San Diego Community College District. She also received a Community College Teaching Credential in Business and earned another Single Subject Teaching Credential in “Dance/PE” from SDSU. Along with Music, Jean has also taught Effective Communication, and Health for Older Adults.

Aspiring to be a music copyright lawyer, Jean completed one year of law school. A great experience but reinforced the passion for teaching.

1989, Jean was the head of the Dance Department at Grossmont High School for two years.

With the onset of the pandemic, Jean turned to her love of history and rock music to teach “The History of Rock and Roll”. Jean teaches online music and health O.A with Zoom.

Jean enjoys reading, playing piano, music, sewing, genealogy, and family time. She stays active with clogging, square dancing, exercise groups and walking her dog “Chico”. She has volunteered many hours of her time with local community theater groups.
