This Week: Repurposing GLP-1 Inhibitors for Weight Loss and Cognition
This week, we will explore a clear and accessible overview of GLP-1 agonists, such as Ozempic and Zepbound, focusing on how they support weight loss and why scientists are now investigating their potential benefits for brain health and cognition. We'll also develop an understanding of metabolic and vascular risk factors and how they impact the brain. In addition, we'll examine how GLP-1 medications work, summarize their possible effects on brain health—both indirect and direct—and consider important factors such as potential side effects and the current state of research. As these medications continue to gain widespread attention for weight management, we’ll dive into the emerging science behind their possible role in promoting long-term cognitive health.
Last Week: AI & the Brain – How Technology Can Support Lifelong Learning
Last week, we explored how artificial intelligence (AI) can support lifelong learning and brain health in older adults. We discussed how tools like brain-training games, voice assistants, and ChatGPT can provide personalized, engaging ways to stay mentally active. The science of brain plasticity shows that the brain can keep learning and adapting throughout life, and AI can help by offering tailored challenges and support.
We also looked at how AI tools assist with memory, language learning, and social connection. While helpful, these technologies work best when combined with real-world learning, social interaction, and critical thinking. By thoughtfully integrating AI into daily life, older adults can boost cognitive resilience, stay curious, and enjoy meaningful learning at any age.
