All of our intermediate students have been learning about our government and how elections work. Since there was a snap election, this was a timely project. Each of the candidates agreed to speak to our classes and we had 3 separate Zoom calls where the students had prepared questions on the following areas: Education, Small Business and Tourism, Childcare, Climate and Housing. The kids had thoughtful, thought-provoking questions and got to the heart of some of the main issues. We then talked about how to vote and how to critically think about each of the candidates to make a good decision for themselves.
This learning culminated in our Student Vote, run by Mrs. Unruh's class, with the students acting as poll clerks and scrutinizers for the vote. Some students then wrote paragraphs explaining their choice and the reasons for their choice. Some future politicians and finance experts in our groups!
Check out our results here.

In light of the restrictions for communication and visitation opportunities for the elderly in Care homes during COVID times, Mrs. Edwards class decided that a thoughtful and caring thing our students can do to help with this issue was to reach out and write letters.
Seb and James reflected on this project and wrote:
"Two weeks ago our teacher suggested that we should send friendly letters to elderly people in care omes in Ontario. So we did. It was a fun project that took a few weeks for everyone to complete/ it was probably the best project we have had so far. We are looking forward to hearing back from them and to read their stories! We hope it makes them feel better".
Halloween was very different this year at MPE. Since we could not get together in the gym to do our typical fun costume parade we decided to visit each class/cohort and take some pictures to put together a little slide show of the day.
In Mr. D's class students took each other's photo in front of a green screen and used Photoshop to remove the background and place their heads on top of famous paintings from around the world. They were required to use many alterations on the image to make their faces look like paintings, as well as tools such as: "Magic Wand, Clone Tool, and Layers" to create the final product.
Not only are students learning how to use these important 21st century tools, but they are also learning to think critically about the images we see in the media.
Students in Mr. Knicley's class have been working to create a game in P.E. They had to work in teams of 2-3 students to create a brand new game, or a new twist to a classic game to teach the class. Students had to assess how this game met saftey requirements, and what muscles the game uses as part of their physical development.
