This fall/winter our intermediate students undertook a significant project building and creating music videos in studio with Ms. Edwards. They worked in groups to discuss, plan, shoot and edit videos. We celebrated this past week holding the "Oscars" and awarded students based on what they created and how they were able to work together to demonstrate creativity and exploration.
Many students were activly seeking more time, coming in at lunch to edit and work on their music video. It was impressive to see what they were able to accomplish over the term project.
Students were excited to come back after this weekends final push to melt away the snow.. We not only have our field back, but we were also able to purchase new games, soccer balls, basketballs and equipment for outdoor use. It was great to see all the students out trying out new games at lunch.
The Grade 1 students in Mrs. Sumaling's class put together this amazing art display in their classroom. Right now is an exciting time in all of our K/1 classrooms as students are watching the life cycle process unfold right in front of their eyes as they learn about the salmon life cycle.
Mrs. Williams has also just put her chicken eggs into an incubator, and all of our students love to watch this process and see the baby chicks hatch.
With the generous support of PAC we have received a shipment of 40 brand new Yamaha guitars at the school, and two stands to hold and house all of these guitars for easy access for the students. We were able to purchase 4 different kind of guitars, so students are able to play on guitars that are the right size, shape and style that they feel most comfortable learning on. Much like learning to ride a bike, it is important for the students to be able to learn a guitar that “fits” them.
In order to help promote music and continued learning at home we built a raffle process and will sell the remaining old guitars that are still in “playable”. We have had over 70 responses (and still counting), which demonstrates the love for music in this community. We are happy to see these older guitars get in the hands of students who can take their learning in the classroom home.
Ms. Edwards and the students are looking forward to getting some good use out of these instruments. Thank YOU PAC!
We have just booked MAY 23rd as our district public speaking night at the The Maury Young Arts Centre. 6 years ago Myrtle Philip staff started the Myrtle ED Talks, and we have built this into a district event where 4-5 speakers from each school in the north come and present an idea worth sharing.
Students have started working on their speeches when they returned after spring break, and are excited (and some nervous) to present to their class. A few students from each class will be selected to present at the school, and a few from the school will be selected to present on the 23rd of May.
This is a great cultural tradition at this school!
As a follow-up to our email before Spring Break, we are reaching out to you with a request to complete a survey to help inform the Refresh Process for our School District’s Education Plan: Pathways to Learning.
We welcome feedback from all members of our community — parents, students, staff and the greater public will all have the opportunity to participate in the process.
Please visit our Pathways to Learning - Refresh website where you will find background information on the project as well as a link to complete the short survey. The survey is open until Friday, April 19, 2019.
Thank you for your time and consideration and we look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Lisa McCullough

Teachers met in Squamish this past Monday to learn about Boundaries and Bias & Cultural Sensitivities. Natasha Tony shared her in-depth exploration into understanding the importance of equity & inclusion from both the individual and collective experience. It was significant content for us to explore as we work in such a dynamic field with so many different people and backgrounds.
Our grade 6/7 yearbook committee is in full swing. Our Year Book Team have been busy working at lunch to edit photos, and work with the year book software to meet their deadline and produce a book that incorporates images and stories from all grades throughout this year.
Ordering info will be out soon.
Three of our Grade 6/7 students have started organizing a ZERO waste week here at MPE community School. They have been researching recipes to help students be more involved in making and packing their own lunches, and will be presenting to the students after Easter Weekend some ideas on how to contribute to the challenge and reduce our Schools weekly consumption.
More information will come out later this week.
