In 2007, two Nova Scotia students decided to take action after witnessing a younger student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. The two students bought 50 pink t-shirts and encouraged schoolmates to wear them and send a powerful message of solidarity to the bully.
This event sparked a nation-wide movement called Pink Shirt Day. On Feb 27th 2019, schools all across the country encouraged students to wear pink shirts to continue to send a powerful message of community, solidarity and importance of creating and maintaining safe, inclusive learning environments for all students, staff and families.
We held an intermediate assembly at 1:00pm where students watched the short clip and debriefed "pink shirt day : kindness lasts a lifetime". This clip gets students to think about how their "future self" will look back at their actions.
At the primary assembly we watched and debriefed "the good birds club". This show has Big bird trying to change who he is to join a club. We talked about diversity and being proud of who we are and the importance for all students to be inclusive.
With so much snow, our playground is starting to disappear. Students have started getting creative out on the playground. Snow soccer
Students in Mrs. Roth's class looked for student driven feedback last week testing their "Canadian games" out on the other grade 3/4 class and a selection of senior students from Mrs. Ledingham's class.
Students were very enthusiastic explaining the details about the games and how they worked.
A true example of creativity, innovation and design, as these students had to incorporate what they learned about Canada into a fun playable game.
David McColm came in on Monday the 11th to give a talk about the work he has done photographing our Whistler landscapes. Such an inspiring visit for our staff and students to see how he captures such stunning images.
A big thank you to Mrs. Williams for writing a Wellness grant for our staff, which brought in a dietician to talk about healthy eating habits. Staff met on a Friday after school to learn and ask questions. It was a great learning opportunity for our Team. The success and wellness of our students relies so heavily on the success and wellness of our staff!
Mrs. Unruh's class went on a tour at the SLCC . They learned alot about clothing, protocols, transportation, historical sites around Whistler, and traditional foods and cultural understandings. The class made cedar bracelets and watched the movie about the Squamish and Lil’wat nations. After, the class had some question and answer time with the curator, and was so productive for their understanding on how the Squamish and Lil’wat people lived on their lands.
