On Feb. 14th 2019 we ran the whole school through a drum circle to bring awareness and conversation around mental health. The goal was to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness, and get our community talking about mental wellness in an open and supportive way.
Since Feb14th is a day we show compassion and care for others, it was fitting we connected our drumming on this day. We see social drumming as a way to:
1) be part of a community. For the first 5 min of each drum circle every class was able to come together with non-verbal cues and follow Mr. Maynard and Mrs. Edwards. By being perceptive and listing to each other students K-7 were able to participate as a community with unity as they drummed together.
2) do something that makes us feel good. Research is starting to come out on the effects of social drumming and how it makes us feel. Follow this link to a recent study review..
The video on the left is from 2014 when we first ran Keep the Beat for Mental Health.
Our Student Leadership team put together some intramural activities for our youngest primary grades this past winter. Last week marked the close of a very successful 6 week run of handball.
We were very proud of our students organizing, running and leading our younger students through this fun activity.
Our Pay it Forward Fridge has arrived. For the past month, WCSS have been providing healthy lunches for our students. The lunches and snacks provided here are for anyone who needs it - for someone who has forgotten a lunch (or part of their lunch), someone who couldn't get to the grocery store the night before, etc.. We want to support our kids and our community by providing this added service. All we ask, is when someone does something to support you, you give back by doing something small to support someone else.
The food in this fridge is generously provided by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, DAYHU Group, and funding from individuals in our community. If you are hungry please feel free to take a snack or meal with you!
This food is prepared and maintained by Whistler Community Services Society. Food is labelled with the date that it was packaged and with any allergy alerts or dietary restrictions.
If you have questions about the food provided here or would like more information, please contact cara@mywcss.org.
If you would like to ‘pay it forward’ here are some ideas!
- open a door for someone
- say hello to someone new
- give someone a compliment
- play with a new friend at recess
- say thank you to someone today
- sit with a new friend on the bus
An act of kindness doesn't have to be big...
I love how Mrs. Unruh's class have displayed their intentions out for our community to see. Each card here has the "word" each student chose to focus on as they work through term two. In the fold of this card they have written their action plan to achieve their goals.
Local bear expert Michael Allen visited MPE for two days to run each class through an overview of Whistler's black bear population. With over 30 years of experience studying Whistler's bears, Michael gave our students a detailed and unique picture of our most charismatic omnivores in our valley. Students and Teachers love Michael's visits. Learning about our bears is a real treat for our kids.
There are so many wonderful things happening in the classroom on a regular basis.
In Mrs. Desbrisays class this past week students were building electric circuits to light up Christmas lights. The excitement of the students when they were able to figure out how to add a switch to the circuit and see first hand how and why something they use every day works was "electrifying".
Students in Mrs. Kim's and Mrs. Roth's class were measuring the hallway this past week. I love seeing students get out and physically explore how numbers and math integrate into our daily lives. Connecting mathematical thinking to our physical surrounding is a very important part of developing our number sense.
Students in Mrs. Roth's & Mrs. Kim's class put together a beautiful display of their art work and their creative writing around the Aurora Borealis. If you make it into the school please stop by and see their paintings and fine work!
