October 2023
The months of September and October, from the 15th to the 15th, are celebrated as Hispanic Heritage Month. What started out as a week-long celebration in 1968, signed into legislation by Lyndon B. Johnson; two decades later, in 1988, was written out as a month-long celebration by Ronald Reagan. During this time, many Hispanic countries have their independence days, such as the 15th, 16th, and 18th of September. On the 15th, we celebrate Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The following day is for Mexico, and the 18th for Chile. Many other Hispanic countries celebrate outside of this 31 day celebration that honors the contributions, cultures, and achievements of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. During these months, there are many festivals centered around honoring Hispanic Heritage.

Robotics season has started! There are already 4 robotics teams, three of which are founded by the Sophomore Class: Sewer Rats, Demon Dogs, and Hellcats. The fourth team is Mango, which was created by the Freshman Class. All four cadres are no longer recruiting.
This season is called “Centerstage.” The rules are very simple, each team will score points with small plastic hexagonal pieces called pixels placed in certain areas on the backboard and throughout the arena. There are also paper drones that our robots will launch for extra points. For all teams, remember to go every Friday to learn new skills and to develop your robot. The next build session for the teams will be November 5th and the next build session after that will be on the third of December.
Join us on December 9th, during the first qualifier that we’ll be in! Come support your favorite person, team or our school!

October is breast cancer awareness month, which had originally just been a week-long celebration, started in 1985. It is now held for the entirety of the month of October, and is symbolized by a pink ribbon. The ribbon- which was at one point peach -was introduced in 1979, by Alexandra Penney and Evelyn Lauder in a magazine. This stuck around, and now the pink ribbon is a sign of breast cancer awareness. This month’s celebration is held to educate people on the different breast cancers, and support people who have been diagnosed or have beaten it.
In the United States alone, every one in eight women suffer from the disease, while there are over 2.3 million people who suffer from it worldwide. Since these statistics are so drastic, there is a month dedicated to the illness. Throughout this month, there are many different companies that give profit made during October to breast cancer relief and research organizations. One well known site is breastcancer.org, which researches the spread of the cancer and collects money to be put into more research and help for patients.
There are many different types of breast cancer that affect people in different ways. Two of the most common types are invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). Out of ten breast cancer patients, 8 have IDC, and out of the many invasive breast cancers, every one in ten is ILC. Invasive ductal carcinoma starts in the milk duct cells, then spreads by breaking through the wall of the duct and traveling to and growing in nearby breast tissue. It can then possibly travel to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. Invasive lobular carcinoma starts in a similar place, the glands in the breast that make milk. It can spread to other parts of the body and is known to be harder to detect. People with ILC have a higher chance of having cancer in both breasts. Although these are just two types of invasive breast cancers, there are many more and many different sub types. There are also non-invasive breast cancers that can be tumors and/or can be cured, for the cancer does not spread past the duct in the breast.

Submission by Symarrah Carbon:
"Icy cold... the feeling hadn't left his face, but had seemed to travel and sit all over his body. Small drops of the same mysterious coldness sat gently onto the darkened mass that was his skin, but instead of a lasting feeling, what came after was... wet?
As he had practiced previously, he slowly pried his eyes open, only to close them again nearly immediately, this time out of the pain from the perfect white that brightened the area.
Fluttering his eyes open once more, Rouge properly adjusted to the light, looking around himself and taking in the feel of the powder-like, white substance beneath and around him. It definitely felt familiar but he just couldn't put a name to it.
He hated it. It was cold and it was wet when it landed on him singularly on patches of humanized skin, though he did take into account how the cold aspect of this entirely new sensation felt almost comfortable when it landed on the black portions of his body, as though it was warming to his temperature. . . Or matching it."
